The shop

Around twenty-five independent vendors, each with their own corner of the building. What is on the shelves changes as they do, which is the reason to come back.

Space for people testing a business for the first time. Several of the shops here began exactly that way.

The lunch counter

The original Kress lunch counter, back in use. Food made from scratch, in a tea room that seats sixty-five under eighteen-foot ceilings.

Made in the building, not delivered to it. Different depending on the day and what came in.

For eating there with coffee, or taking home in a box.

At a counter that has been serving it, on and off, since 1935.

The tea room, booked

The same room, taken over for the afternoon. Sixty-five seats under eighteen-foot ceilings, with the kitchen already in the building.

Baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays — the room people ask for once they have eaten in it.

Meetings and clubs

A room downtown with tables, chairs, coffee and lunch, without hiring a hall.

Smaller gatherings that want the building rather than a function suite.

The building

S. H. Kress and Co. built this in 1935 to be the finest thing on Noble Street, and it still is.

Eighteen-foot ceilings, dark wood floors, and the original Art Deco moldings, brought back rather than replaced.

Kress stores were built to be noticed — the company put real architecture on ordinary main streets all over the South. Anniston's is one of the best left, and it is a working shop again rather than a photograph of one.
